1956 proposed, 2026 realised: Train reaches Birbal’s birthplace Sidhi for the first time since Independence
A train reached the Rampur Naikin-Churhat area of Madhya Pradesh’s Sidhi district, birthplace of one of Akbar's Navratnas, Bribal, for the first time since Independence on October 24. The milestone follows the inauguration of two railway sections ...
The arrival of the train is particularly significant because the proposal to build a railway line in the region dates back to 1956. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav inaugurated the new railway sections virtually. They also flagged off two new trains, including the Devendranagar-Churhat MEMU service. Passengers were allowed to travel free of charge on the inaugural day. Regular services are scheduled to begin on October 26, with the trains operating six days a week, except Sundays.
Why is the railway line to Sidhi significant?
The new railway section is part of the 541-km Lalitpur-Singrauli railway project, which aims to improve connectivity across parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. For Sidhi, the development represents a step towards ending its long wait for railway connectivity. Better rail access could make travel easier for residents while improving links between the region's industrial centres, markets and neighbouring districts. The project is also expected to support economic activity across the Vindhya region, which has important cement and energy industries. Improved transportation links could help businesses move goods more efficiently and strengthen connections between the industrial areas of Rewa, Satna and Singrauli.
The next major target is to extend railway connectivity to Sidhi district headquarters by December 2026, according to Madhya Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla. Work is also progressing on the railway section between Sidhi and Singrauli, where 16 tunnels are being constructed. The government has set a target of extending the Lalitpur-Singrauli railway corridor to Singrauli by December 2028.
From a 1956 proposal to a railway project worth thousands of crores
The railway line has a long history. According to Rewa MP Janardan Mishra, the proposal dates back to 1956, when a promise was made to complete the line within 10 years. However, progress remained limited for decades, with the project reportedly failing to move beyond the survey stage by 1977. The 541-km Lalitpur-Singrauli railway project was sanctioned in 1997-98 with an initial estimated cost of around Rs 925 crore. Its estimated cost has since risen to approximately Rs 9,000 crore. The Lalitpur-Khajuraho section, spanning 165 km, has been operational since 2016. The inauguration of the two new sections, measuring 53 km between Satna and Devendranagar and 65 km between Rewa and Churhat, marks another stage in the project's expansion. Shukla said efforts would also be made to extend a train currently operating between Bhopal and Rewa to Sidhi once the district headquarters is connected.
What did the Madhya Pradesh government say about the project?
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav described the new railway services as an important development for areas that have waited a long time for better connectivity. He said the expansion would create opportunities for agriculture, industry and employment. The state government said railway infrastructure projects worth more than Rs 1.15 lakh crore are underway in Madhya Pradesh. Better connectivity is expected to help farmers transport their produce to markets and make the region more accessible to businesses.Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also highlighted the importance of strengthening railway infrastructure in the Vindhya and Bundelkhand regions. He referred to the doubling of the Katni-Singrauli and Rewa-Satna railway sections, which is expected to improve capacity and create scope for more long-distance train services. The minister also said passenger facilities were being expanded at 80 railway stations across the state. On environmental protection, he said four saplings would be planted for every tree cut during project work.
Rail, road and air connectivity to boost the Vindhya region
Railway expansion is only one part of the broader infrastructure development planned for the region. The Rewa-Sidhi-Singrauli four-lane road project and air services from Rewa airport are also expected to improve connectivity. Together, these transport links could make it easier for people to travel, help businesses reach new markets and support the movement of industrial goods. For residents of Sidhi, however, the next milestone remains the arrival of trains at the district headquarters. With a December 2026 target for that extension and a further plan to connect Singrauli by December 2028, attention will now turn to how quickly the remaining work can be completed.
