In the design of 39 of its 91 stations in this phase, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will incorporate the principle of multimodal integration. According to the plan, skywalks and arcades will be built in and around stations to allow passengers to travel seamlessly and decongest routes around these stations.
"The objective is seamless transition and interchanges between different modes to complete the trip. Access to options to make travel cheaper, faster and more comfortable will be ensured," said a government official.
As part of multimodal integration, an effective spatial allocation of various para-transit modes will be done so that convenience of public transport users is maximized. The plan, which has been approved by UTTIPEC, the umbrella transport body , will also improve walkability .
A basic design template for all stations has been proposed. It includes intermediate public transport parking. A radius of 300m around the station zone will be redesigned. Essential facilities like public toilets, bus stops and para-transit options like autorickshaw and cycle rickshaw stands will be provided.
"The concept design of the station zone divides the area into circles. Within the 50m zone, space for bus stop, vendor zones and cycle rentals will be provided. Further afield in the 100m zone, a multi-functional zone for feeder buses, Grameen Sewa stands will be earmarked," revealed a source.
In the 150m zone, stands for cycle-rickshaws and auto-rickshaws as well as cycle parking will be arranged while beyond that, drop-off points for private vehicles and taxis will be set up. Public toilets will also be provided in this zone. Enhanced lighting - especially along bus stops, elevated walkways, streets and footpaths - will be mandatory . Parking for cars will be located beyond the 300m zone.
With several interchange stations also part of the MMI design, officials are hoping that the upcoming Metro stations will go a long way towards removing traffic congestion in densely-populated localities.
