The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to enhance commuter experience with the development of 14 new interchange stations under its Phase III expansion, aimed at ensuring smoother and more efficient transfers across the network, Times of India reported.

The upcoming interchange points will connect the Pink Line (Majlis Park–Shiv Vihar) and Magenta Line (Janakpuri West–Botanical Garden) with existing corridors such as the Yellow, Red, Blue and Violet Lines. These new corridors have been designed as ‘ring’ routes, linking multiple radial lines at several junctions across the city.

To facilitate seamless movement, DMRC plans to build a network of foot overbridges (FOBs), ramps, underground passages and travelators spanning a combined length of over three kilometres. These additions are intended to reduce walking time and improve accessibility, especially at busy interchange hubs.

At key locations like Dhaula Kuan, one of the longest foot overbridges will connect the Airport Express Line station with the Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus station on the Pink Line. Given the considerable distance between the two, the corridor will be equipped with around 22 travelators to assist commuters, particularly those travelling to and from the airport with luggage.

In stations such as Anand Vihar and Botanical Garden, existing and new stations will be fully integrated. Elsewhere, connectivity will be enabled through a mix of infrastructure depending on station design, FOBs for elevated links, ramps where levels differ, and subways where both stations are underground.

Specific stations including Azadpur, Mayur Vihar Phase-I, Karkarduma and Welcome will see FOBs without travelators, while ramps are being constructed at interchanges like Netaji Subhash Place, Lajpat Nagar and Kalkaji Mandir. At Janakpuri West, where the Blue Line is elevated and the Magenta Line runs about 17 metres underground, extra-long escalators will directly connect concourse levels.

DMRC is also introducing colour-coded guidance systems across interchange pathways to help commuters navigate easily, particularly first-time users.

The initiative is part of DMRC’s broader push to improve last-mile connectivity and reduce congestion at interchange stations, making travel across Delhi’s expanding metro network more seamless.
