Authorities at Delhi Airport will distribute over 6,000 seed balls to flyers at Terminal 1's Arrival area to mark the World Environment Day today. Airport operator, Delhi International Airport Limited, said that the move is aimed to promote biodiversity, increase green cover and support carbon sequestration among flyers.

Seed balls are low-cost and effect method to plant trees. They are made by embedding seeds in a mixture of clay and compost and can be scattered on soil with minimal care. The seeds germinate later.

"The seed balls include a carefully curated mix of fruit-bearing and environmentally beneficial tree species—lemon, tamarind and gooseberry, along with neem and peepal. These species were selected for their ecological value, medicinal properties and ability to thrive in varied climatic conditions," said DIAL.

Local communities have prepared the seed balls, providing them with a sustainable source of livelihood. "The fruit-bearing trees, which will grow out of the seed balls thrown by flyers, will contribute to sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities," said DIAL.

CEO-DIAL Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said that through their unique seed ball distribution campaign, they were inviting passengers to actively participate in reforestation and ecological preservation.

"Each seed ball will not only help restore green cover but will also support rural livelihoods. This initiative reflects our deep commitment to environmental stewardship and social impact," he added.
