KOLKATA: The West Bengal government has gone ahead with the proposals to open small airports at Coochbehar, Ambari, Purulia, Vishnupur and Burdwan for short distance flights within the state, besides revamping the country's oldest Behala flying club in the metropolis.
While the Coochbehar airport in north Bengal was almost ready, work would shortly start at Ambari, Burdwan, Purulia and Vishnupur, Transport Minister Subhas Chakraborty told the Assembly on Monday without detailing the financial involvement in the proposals.
The government has also floated a global tender for upgrading the flying club at Behala into a modern commercial pilot training institute. The tender was yet to be opened.
A Rs 10 crore fund was recently set up as an initial step to upgrade the flying club and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation had been contacted. Chakraborty said that the state government had decided to set up a cargo hub of international standard at the crossing of NH 2 and NH 6 on 1,000 acres.
Besides, he said, work would shortly start on the setting up of two truck terminals at Rajarhat and Durgapur Expressway to ease pressure on city roads. He was replying to the debate on the budgetary demands for grants for the Transport department.
