WB govt pitches Reliance funds for airport

West Bengal government sought more investments from Reliance Industries to set up a cargo airport in the western fringes of the metropolis.

KOLKATA: On the heels of Mukesh Ambani's announcing plans to invest Rs 4,000 crore in West Bengal for an agri-retail chain and a gas pipeline, the state government sought more investments from Reliance Industries to set up a cargo airport in the western fringes of the metropolis.

The proposal for the cargo airport was made by Transport Minister Subhas Chakraborty when Ambani called on him at his secretariat chamber after meeting Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

"We want to set up a cargo airport near the crossing of the NH6 (Mumbai-Kolkata) and NH2 (Delhi-Kolkata). There is a large plot of unused railway land there," Chakraborty told media later.

Stating that the government wanted the project to be in the public-private partnership (PPP) model, Chakraborty said that Ambani evinced interest in the project and asked the government to submit a proposal.

During his meeting with Ambani, the transport minister also discussed the possibility of commercially utilising the state transport bus and tram depots by setting up shopping malls on unutilised land.

"The talks were held at the preliminary stage. We will work out the details soon," the minister said.
