Vodafone Idea director (regulatory and corporate affairs) P Balaji has resigned, the telecom operator said Wednesday. He will be joining Air India in a newly created role of group head (governance, regulatory, compliance and corporate affairs), the Tata Group airline said.

Balaji was the key person at Vodafone Idea interacting with officials in the government, the loss-making company's largest shareholder.

In a statement, Air India said Balaji will assume his role on January 11 and report to CEO and MD Campbell Wilson.

Balaji is leaving Vodafone Idea after a nearly decade-long stint. ET learnt in October about Balaji's plan to leave Vodafone Idea, but the firm, in response to a query emailed on October 31, denied that he was considering moving out. The company did not respond to a follow-up email sent on January 2.
