The government wants to encourage development of 50 greenfield low-cost airports primarily in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
"Tenders for two greenfield airports, namely Goa Mopa airport and the long-awaited Navi Mumbai airport, are expected to proceed in the second half of 2013," according to a study jointly conducted by aviation think tank Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation ( CAPA) and airline IT services provider SITA.
"Approximately $10 billion was invested in airport modernisation between 2015 and 2012. In early 2013, new airport terminals were completed at Chennai and Kolkata airports, while Mumbai is expected to open terminus two to domestic traffic in late 2013," the agencies said.
The document was released during ongoing Aviation ICT Forum 2013 here.
"By the year-end, new terminals will be inaugurated at all six metro airports representing a significant milestone in the airport modernisation programme," the document said.
"There are 18 greenfield airports which have received in-principle approval, in addition to which a major facility is to be developed at Pune for which a site has been identified," the document said.
