With the Tata Group submitting the winning bid for Air India, Ratan Tata said that J R D Tata, the founder of the airline would have been overjoyed if he were alive today.

“The Tata Group winning the bid for Air India is great news!” the Tata Group chairman emeritus said on Twitter. It would take considerable effort to rebuild the airline, he said, but he was hopeful that the airline would provide strong market opportunity to the Tatas.



“On an emotional note, Air India, under the leadership of Mr JRD Tata had, at one time, gained the reputation of being one of the most prestigious airlines in the world,” he said.

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran called it a historic moment.

“It will be our endeavour to build a world-class airline which makes every Indian proud,” he said in a statement. “On this occasion, I would like to pay tribute to J.R.D. Tata, pioneer of Indian aviation, whose memory we cherish.”
