Tata-Sikorsy S-92 copter cabins facility goes indigenous
Tata-Sikorsky joint venture said it has delivered the first fully indigenously made cabin from its Hyderabad facility.
Besides, the facility has also produced the 50th cabin this month since it began operations in 2011, a company release said.
Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) had in June 2009 formed a joint venture with the the US-based Sikorsky Aircraft to produce S-92 helicopter cabins in the country.
"In a short span, Tata Advanced Systems has delivered on the challenge of indigenous manufacturing and assembly of cabins for S-92 helicopters," TASL chairman S Ramadorai said.
The domestic operation is not only assembling cabins but also producing all parts needed for the assembly, before shipping the cabins to the US for aircraft completion and customer delivery.
The facility has a capacity to produce four cabins a month with over 5,000 parts being produced by Tata Aerospace unit near Hyderabad, the release said.
"We have been able to create an ecosystem for aerospace manufacturing in order to achieve 100 per cent indigenisation of the manufactured components and materials that meet stringent specifications of Sikorsky's S-92 helicopters," Sikorsky Senior Vice President for operations Shane Eddy said.
