Sri Lanka's national carrier stops night flights

COLOMBO: Amid fears of more nocturnal attacks by Tamil Tiger rebels, Sri Lanka's national carrier on Friday stopped with immediate effect its night flights in and out of the country's only international airport here.
The Sri Lankan Airlines, which accounts for over two thirds of flights in and out of the Bandaranaike International Airport here, said it was stopping night flights with immediate effect.
The airlines, which is partly owned and fully managed by Emirates Airlines of Dubai, said it will never compromise with the safety of passengers, crew and aircraft, which is its main concern.
The decision came a day after the airport announced shutting its airspace during the night from May 10 after Tiger Tiger rebels carried out three incursions into the airspace in the past month.
Three other airlines have also decided to stop night flying to Sri Lanka fearing it could lead to security problems in case the Tigers brought their light aircraft again into the controlled air space.
