Sikorsky, Tatas ink deal to make chopper cabins

Helicopter manufacturer Sikorsky Aircraft has signed an agreement with Tata group company Tata Advanced Systems to manufacture helicopter cabins in India.

MUMBAI: Helicopter manufacturer Sikorsky Aircraft has signed an agreement with Tata group company Tata Advanced Systems to manufacture helicopter cabins in India.

The first Sikorsky S-92 cabin is scheduled for delivery in late next year from a plant to be built by Tata Advanced Systems, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata group���s main investment firm Tata Sons, in Andhra Pradesh.

Tata Advanced Systems is a leading provider of integrated solutions for aerospace, defence, homeland security and disaster management.

Tata group chairman Ratan N Tata said the manufacture of the S-92 cabin in India is a ���significant first step in the growth of India as a global hub for aerospace manufacturing.���

S-92 helicopters perform search and rescue missions, transport oil workers to offshore platforms and other assignments. Sikorsky president Jeffrey P Pino said the Stratford, Conn.-based subsidiary of United Technologies Corp is tapping into workforce in India���s growing aerospace market.

���India���s aerospace market is poised for significant growth, and we are thrilled to have the opportunities to support that growth,��� he said. The agreement marks the first for the manufacture of Sikorsky products in India.
