NEW DELHI: Indira Gandhi International airport went without power for an hour on Thursday after a section of the cable got snapped due to an accident near Bamnauli substation . Chief secretary Rakesh Mehta said that the hook at the end of the crane arm of a bulldozer that was crossing the Bamnauli sub station got tangled with the overhead cable bringing it down.

A Delhi International Airport (P) Ltd (DIAL) official said that power supply got disconnected at the airport at 3.22pm. “Within 30 seconds of the grid failure, backup power was restored through captive DG sets and there was no disruption of essential services at the airport. The normal power supply from Delhi Transco resumed at 4.23pm,” said the official.

At the airport, no major disruption was reported. In some parts, the backup kicked in within a couple of minutes while in some office areas, there was a power cut for about 5-7 minutes. According to Transco officials, the 220 KV Bamnauli-DIAL Circuit-I got damaged near Rajokri after a crane rammed into its lines.

The crane was being used by The Umrao Hotel to plant trees in its premises. The line snapped at Bamnauli end resulting in shut down of at DIAL and Bamnauli sub stations.
