Parachutes spotted over Mumbai airport; DGCA to probe into it

"We have been asked to inquire into the issue. We are awaiting details on the issue. The police is also investigating the matter," a DGCA official told.

MUMBAI | DELHI: The civil aviation ministry has asked the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to inquire into the incident of five parachutes flying into the Mumbai airport airspace on Saturday evening. “We have been asked to inquire into the issue. We are awaiting details on the issue,” a DGCA official told ET.

The Mumbai airport police is also investigating the matter. “We have deployed several teams in adjoining localities to investigate where the parachutes were flown from,” said senior inspector Rajendra Nagbhirey. No report has been lodged yet, though, he said.

“Stray parachutes have been spotted earlier that were flown from Juhu beach. But we haven’t seen anything like these and definitely not five of them,” he said. The police officer said no radioactive signals were intercepted from the parachutes.

The parachutes, which could have been remote-controlled, as per some claims, were seen straying into Mumbai airport’s airspace at 5.55 pm on Saturday. The parachutes were spotted by a Jet Airways pilot, who aborted his take-off upon sighting them.

“We have asked the Indian Meteorological Department also whether they had sent anything. This is, however, unlikely, as IMD would have informed the authorities and a NOTAM (notice to airmen) would have been issued,” the official said.
