No shifting of site of Navi Mumbai greenfield airport
With demands for shifting the location of the proposed greenfield airport at Navi Mumbai, Civil Aviation Ministry today said the site would not be changed as it was chosen by representatives of all concerned departments and agencies.
"Maharashtra government has approached the Union Environment Ministry.... The site was chosen by a panel comprising of all concerned agencies including Environment Ministry and the National Coastal Management Zone Authority," Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said here.
Replying to questions, he said "if there are some issues, these will be resolved to the satisfaction of all concerned".
Maintaining that land acquisition was a big problem in and around Mumbai, Patel said the site was chosen keeping in mind various factors including its connectivity and the trans-harbour link.
At a separate meeting, Civil Aviation Secretary Ashok Chawla said "since there is no other site suitable for the airport, the greenfield airport will come up at the proposed location".
He said Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has also written to the Civil Aviation Ministry for building the airport at the original site.
