New pilot in IndiGo's cockpit: Willie Walsh takes charge as CEO

Aviation industry veteran Willie Walsh officially assumed charge as chief executive officer of IndiGo on Monday, taking over the reins of India's largest airline as it pushes ahead with an ambitious international expansion plan.

The airline had announced his appointment in March this year.

Walsh takes charge at a time when IndiGo is expanding its international footprint, inducting long-haul aircraft and strengthening its global network.

As CEO, he will oversee the airline's overall management and strategic direction, with a focus on accelerating international growth, driving operational excellence, strengthening its network and commercial strategy, and improving customer experience.

InterGlobe Aviation's shares were trading at Rs 5327.35 apiece on the BSE, up 3.03 per cent on Monday as of 10.45 AM.

Welcoming Walsh, IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia said the airline was entering its third decade and was poised for its next phase of growth.

"As IndiGo enters its third decade and stands poised for the next phase of its growth, I am delighted to officially welcome Willie as the airline's Chief Executive Officer. His extensive global experience in the aviation industry, combined with his operational and strategic expertise, will be instrumental as IndiGo accelerates its international expansion strategy. I am confident that under his leadership, IndiGo will further strengthen its standing on the global aviation stage and increasingly contribute to continued development of the Indian aviation sector," Bhatia said.

Walsh said IndiGo had built a strong foundation over the past two decades and was well placed to benefit from the rapid growth of India's aviation market.

"IndiGo has built a remarkable legacy over the last two decades, establishing itself amongst the largest airlines in the world in a short span of time. Walsh brings more than four decades of aviation experience. He started his career as a pilot at Aer Lingus before becoming its CEO in 2001. He later headed British Airways and International Airlines Group, and most recently served as director general of the International Air Transport Association.
