Navi Mumbai International Airport gets one-year landing charge waiver for international flights

International flights operating from Navi Mumbai International Airport will not have to pay landing charges for the first year under a revised incentive scheme approved by aviation tariff regulator AERA.

The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA), in its September 8 order, allowed a modification to the Variable Tariff Plan (VTP) of Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL), which operates the airport.

The modification was sought by NMIAL to revise the route eligibility criteria and align the incentive more directly with traffic development at the newly opened airport.

Under the revised plan, AERA has waived landing charges for both short-haul and long-haul international routes connecting Navi Mumbai airport for the first year.

The waiver will be reduced to 50% in the second year, while long-haul international services will receive a 25% waiver in the third year.

Short-haul routes cover distances of up to 5,000 km, while routes beyond 5,000 km are classified as long-haul.

For additional international flight frequencies, airlines will receive a 50% discount on landing charges for short-haul services and a 75% discount for long-haul services in the first year.

International freighter services will get a 90% waiver on landing charges in the first year, followed by a 50% discount in the second year.

AERA has also changed the eligibility criteria for the landing-charge waiver. The benefit will now apply to new international routes from Navi Mumbai airport instead of being linked to new routes from the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Under the earlier MMR-based criteria, international routes already operating from Mumbai airport were excluded from the waiver.

With the revised criteria, any international route from Navi Mumbai airport will be eligible for the landing-charge waiver, irrespective of whether the same route is already operational from Mumbai airport.

"Such modification would provide greater opportunities to the airport operator in facilitating the development of international connectivity while ensuring that the benefit of the incentive is linked to the achievement of the intended traffic and utilisation outcomes," AERA said in its order.

The modification to the VTP is aimed at incentivising airlines to introduce and sustain international connectivity from Navi Mumbai airport, the regulator said.

Both Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports are operated by entities under the Adani group.

Navi Mumbai International Airport was inaugurated on October 8, 2025, and began commercial operations on December 25. Its international services commenced on July 15 with an Air India Express flight to Abu Dhabi.
