Navi Mumbai airport gets environmental clearance
The greenfield airport in neighbouring Navi Mumbai has got environmental clearance and work on the project would commence next year, Maharashtra government announced here on Monday.
"The environmental and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) issues which had so far hindered the project, have been cleared by the government," Principal Secretary for Urban Development T C Benjamin told media.
The basic facilities at the airport are expected to be operational in September-October 2013.
"The clauses of CRZ, hindering construction work, have been amended and the work would start soon," Benjamin said.
The government had already appointed a consultant and now they can appoint a developer through tender process, Benjamin said. The developer would be selected on March 31, he added.
The project was delayed as a small portion of land for the proposed airport -- about 150 of the 2,000 hectares -- has mangroves and falls under CRZ-I norms which prohibited airfield activities in the zone.
However, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan pursued the issue with the Prime Minister, assuring the Central Government of protecting environment and marine life.
