Mumbai rains lead to flight disruptions, planes grounded

MUMBAI: The latest heavy spate of rains in Mumbai caused disruptions in flight schedules on Wednesday.

More than 15 flights have been cancelled between today and tomorrow, according to data from Flightradar. More than 350 flights were delayed by more than an hour on average.

Several aircraft, primarily operated by the country’s biggest carrier IndiGo, were on ground. Some were stranded for hours with passengers inside. Many airline personnel working at the airport couldn’t make it to work because of waterlogged streets.


“Due to the unprecedented non-stop rains in Mumbai, there are close to 30 flights on ground. As a result of flooding and water logging on roads and the subsequent traffic jams, many of our ground support staff, crew and captains have not been able to reach the airport on time. As a result, the departure flights have also been held up,” said a spokesperson for IndiGo.

Rains hit traffic and transportation including the usually reliable suburban railway services. The weather department has predicted heavy downpur for the next two days.
