NEW DELHI: Buoyed by its success in six months of operations, private carrier MDLR Airlines on Wednesday announced ambitious plans to foray into the aircargo business in the country, starting with one wide-body aircraft by this year end.

"We are carrying out test marketing for our cargo business and will start out operations with one aircraft by mid-December. These operations would be from Southeast Asian destinations to India. We plan to start with four flights a week," MDLR Cargo Vice-President Rajendra Dubey told media here.

Aiming at becoming the first private carrier to launch freighter service in India, he said the cargo division would be set up as a separate company with an initial equity capital of Rs one crore. The Group has a total investment plan of Rs 25 crore over the next several years.

"We are looking at a (cargo) fleet of 10-15 aircraft in the next few years. Our plans are finally to launch cargo flights to the US and Europe," he said, adding that talks were in final stages with aircraft manufacturers for the first freighter to join the fleet. "A decision is expected next week," he said.

With an initial fleet of two four-engined Avro jets of British Aerospace, the airline which started operations in April this year now connects Delhi, Ranchi, Kolkata, Jodhpur and Chandigarh and would launch its Jaipur service from October 22 with the third aircraft joining the fleet in the next few days.
