NEW DELHI: A SpiceJet plane scraped past a parked IndiGo aircraft at the IGI Airport in the wee hours of Thursday, reportedly damaging the latter structurally. The aircraft maintenance engineer of SpiceJet and two technicians have been de-rostered after the incident. There were no passengers on either aircraft, and no one was injured in the accident. However, both the planes have been grounded.

Airport sources said the incident occurred around 2am. The IndiGo aircraft was parked at bay number 1 when the SpiceJet plan, which was taxiing out of bay number 15, hit it. An IndiGo airlines spokesperson said: “Our aircraft, VT-IEH , was parked at the IGI Airport.

Around 2am, a SpiceJet aircraft, while taxiing out, collided with our aircraft. In the collision, the right side of the IndiGo aircraft fuselage was hit, resulting in a structural damage to the flight recorder access door area. A ‘follow-me vehicle’ , which was on patrol duty, saw the accident and rushed to the bay. Subsequently, DIAL and IndiGo flight safety teams also reached the spot. Both IndiGo and SpiceJet aircraft were not carrying any passengers .”

SpiceJet, meanwhile, denied the severity of the incident. A spokesperson said: “The incident took place while the aircraft was taxiing for regular maintenance. Minor damage was caused to the (IndiGo) aircraft and there were no passengers on board. We are probing the incident.”

The matter has been reported to the directorate general of civil aviation . Officials said the aircraft was possibly reversing and the technicians lost control of it, which is why it ran into the parked aircraft.
