IndiGo, SpiceJet and Akasa Air on Monday issued a travel advisory for passengers travelling from Mumbai as heavy rains hit flight operations in the financial capital.

While IndiGo asked passengers to schedule their journey to the airport early as several parts of the city faced traffic jams, SpiceJet said all departures and arrivals may get affected due to congestion at the airport. It also advised passengers to check the flight status on its website.

Akasa Air also asked passengers to leave early due to the torrential rains.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Airport also advised passengers to check the flight status with respective airlines and allow extra travel time to reach the airport.

Air India plane scare

An Air India Airbus A320 from Kochi to Mumbai slightly veered off while landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) amid heavy rainfall. All passengers were reported safe and deboarded the aircraft without injuries.

The incident happened while the flight was landing. It experienced a runway excursion due to intense rainfall in Mumbai. According to initial information, the pilot was able to successfully pull out tyre and dock the aircraft back.

Mumbai Airport confirmed that the runway excursion took place at 09:27 hours. Meanwhile, minor damage to the airport’s primary runway (Runway 09/27) has been reported. “In order to ensure continuity of operations, the Secondary Runway 14/32 has been activated,” the airport said.

Heavy rains lash Mumbai

Heavy rains lashed Mumbai overnight, causing waterlogging in areas and slowing vehicular movement in parts of the city, civic officials said on Monday. After a reduced rain spell earlier this month and sunny skies for the last few days, the city witnessed heavy showers.

The intensity of the rains had reduced by early morning but most parts of the eastern and eastern suburbs continued to receive heavy downpour. The heavy overnight showers led to waterlogging at several low-lying areas in the city and suburbs.

The Andheri subway (in western part of Mumbai) was closed for traffic due to water accumulation. Motorists complained of slow traffic movement on both the Eastern Express Highway and the Western Express Highway due to rain and other reasons during the morning rush hours. Some commuters also complained that locals trains were running with a little delay.

In the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Monday, the island city recorded an average rainfall of 23.45 mm, the eastern suburbs received 36.42 mm and the western suburbs got 50.02 mm rainfall, civic officials said.
