IndiGo passengers to pay higher fuel charges from April 2

IndiGo will implement revised fuel charges for all new bookings starting April 2, 2026, due to a significant surge in aviation fuel prices. Domestic routes will see charges ranging from INR 275 to INR 950 based on distance. International routes wi...

IndiGo on Wednesday said that the airline will revise fuel charges on both domestic and international flights for all new bookings made from 12:01 AM on April 2, 2026, citing a sharp rise in aviation fuel prices.

The airline said the move follows a steep increase in jet fuel costs across the region. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Jet Fuel Monitor, prices have risen by more than 130% month-on-month.

Despite the surge, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Ministry of Civil Aviation have allowed airlines to pass on only a partial and staggered increase of 25% for domestic operations. IndiGo said it has recalibrated its domestic fuel charges based on travel distance.

The surge in ATF prices comes amid global crude oil volatility and supply disruptions linked to tensions in West Asia, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most important oil transit routes.

Adding to the cost pressures, the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday adopted a resolution to levy an additional excise duty on aviation turbine fuel. The resolution, moved by Pankaj Chaudhary, approved a Central Excise notification dated March 26, 2026, amending the Eighth Schedule to the Finance Act, 2002, to impose a special additional excise duty of ₹50 per litre on ATF.
