India re-elected to world aviation body ICAO

India has been re-elected to the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

NEW DELHI: India has been re-elected to the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the UN agency which codifies principles and techniques of air travel worldwide.

R K Singh, Joint Secretary in the Civil Aviation Ministry, was elected as the Chairman of the Economic Commission of the ICAO, which has Naseem Zaidi as the Indian representative, an official spokesperson said.

The election was held on Sunday at the ICAO's 36th Assembly session in Montreal, in which the Indian team was led by Civil Aviation Secretary Ashok Chawla. The team also included Director General Civil Aviation Kanu Gohain and Airports Authority of India Chairman K Ramalingam.

Presently, ICAO has 190 nations, including India, as contracting states.
