New Delhi: India on Wednesday night announced the closure of its airspace for Pakistani aircraft. It would force rerouting of planes over China or Sri Lanka to reach Southeast Asian destinations, said people with knowledge of the matter.

Neither Pakistani leased or owned aircraft will be allowed to fly over the Indian airspace, according to the government notification.

ET was the first to report that India is considering closing its airspace for Pakistani airlines.

Pakistan had shut its airspace to Indian airlines following New Delhi's measures against its neighbour after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22.

As part of several retaliatory steps, India has already suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and revoked visas of Pakistani citizens.
