'IGI Airport to get a facelift in next 4 months'

The domestic terminal of the IGI Airport would get a facelift in the next four months and the first phase of modernisation of the entire airport would be completed by 2010.


NEW DELHI: The domestic terminal of the IGI Airport here would get a facelift in the next four months and the first phase of modernisation of the entire airport would be completed by 2010, ahead of the Commonwealth Games, a senior officer of the GMR Group said.

Announcing this, GMR Infrastructure Ltd General Manager P Pannicker said, the early targets, to be completed in four months from now, included giving a facelift to the domestic terminal 1-B, which caters to private carriers, besides renovating the toilets and improving the housekeeping standards.

GMR Infrastructure Ltd leads the consortium which would modernise the IGI Airport.

He told a meeting of CII's Delhi council that the first phase of modernising the entire airport would be completed by March 2010, well ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

Pannicker said the master plan of the airport would be completed by September this year and the construction work started in January next.

The GMR official said the passenger traffic, which was expected to grow at an average rate of 15 per cent over the next five years, was likely to cross 28 million by 2010.

The Phase-I of the project, on completion, would have one integrated terminal catering to about 35 million passengers, he said.

CII Delhi Chairman Ankur Bhatia said the restructuring and modernisation of the airport would add to the economic growth tremendously and have wider implication on the aviation sector in the country in general.
