IAF favours technology roadmap on aerospace power
The Indian Air Force on Thursday advocated the need for incorporating a technology roadmap pertaining to aerospace power linked to national security policy with the change in warfare tactics.

NEW DELHI: The Indian Air Force on Thursday advocated the need for incorporating a technology roadmap pertaining to aerospace power linked to national security policy with the change in warfare tactics.
IAF chief Air Chief Marshal Fali H Major said the importance of research and development in the sector was so significant that it was through experience that new ideas appear that could radically alter the nature of the warfare.
"We need to go forward. The government can help with a technology roadmap linked to a national security policy," he said inaugurating a CII conference on India's Aerospace Industry here.
Major favoured the need for reorientation and reorganisation of research and development activities in aerospace industry by using the "large brain bank" of the country and roping in state-funded research institutes.
"The funded institutes like the IITs should be involved in the research and development activities and take off from there. We should use our large brain bank. Some reorientation and reorganisation is definitely needed," he said.
Noting that aerospace industry is a key area of development in the coming years, Major said one should not ape other technology while developing its own.
Though transfer of technology is the easier option for acquiring it, Major said, the issue is to identify the core technology which could be more helpful in indigenisation of the technology.
Noting that there is a technology gap between the developed countries and developing countries like India in the sector, he said, "we cannot simply follow the footsteps (of others) in developing a technology."
