An Air India flight headed to London crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday. A video capturing the final moments shows the Boeing 787 Dreamliner losing altitude before crashing into a building near Meghaninagar and exploding.

According to officials, the aircraft, operating as Flight AI171 to London Gatwick, took off at 1:39 pm from runway 23. Soon after departure, the plane issued a MAYDAY call to air traffic control (ATC).

The video footage shows the plane taking off but going down mid-air before crashing into a building, triggering a massive explosion and sending heavy plumes of black smoke into the air.

The aircraft had 242 people onboard, including two pilots and ten cabin crew members. The flight was commanded by Capt Sumeet Sabharwal with First Officer Clive Kundar. The aircraft was also carrying full fuel for its long-haul journey, which is believed to have intensified the post-crash fire and explosion.

Rescue teams were quickly deployed to the site. Multiple fire engines and ambulances are carrying out rescue operations. Three National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams comprising 90 personnel were mobilised from Gandhinagar, with three additional teams dispatched from Vadodara.
