HAL to enter aircraft conversion business

Aviation major Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) plans to enter the multi-billion dollar business of converting old passenger aircraft into cargo carriers.

BANGALORE: Aviation major Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) plans to enter the multi-billion dollar business of converting old passenger aircraft into cargo carriers.

“We plan to enter the conversion segment. We already have people (seeking conversion) knocking on our doors. Our people who are dealing with the subject are already at it,” an HAL official said.

The defence firm is considering to house the conversion facility at the existing Bangalore airport once it closes down for civilian aircraft when the new international airport becomes operational in April 2008.
Sitting on huge assets, HAL sees the conversion as a big opportunity that would transform the company into a major global player.

According to the company’s proposed venture, the facility would undertake the task of converting old aircraft “with good life left in it” into a cargo aircraft at a competitive cost.
