Govt says airlines sensitised to exercise moderation in pricing of air tickets

The civil aviation ministry Monday told the Rajya Sabha that it has advised airlines to self-regulate and exercise moderation in setting air ticket prices.

Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol addressed the issue in light of widespread frustration from travelers, particularly during peak travel times and major festivals. “Airlines have also been sensitised to exercise moderation in pricing and to keep passengers’ interest in mind,” Mohol said in a written reply to the Upper House.

The minister emphasized that while the government is advocating for more reasonable fares, it does not have direct control over airfares. This position is consistent with global trends towards deregulation, which aim to foster increased competition among airlines and offer more affordable travel options.


“The government does not regulate airfares, as deregulation has increased competition, leading to lower fares and greater accessibility for budget travelers,” Mohol said.

To oversee fare practices, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has established a Tariff Monitoring Unit. This unit is tasked with ensuring that airlines adhere to their declared fare ranges.

However, Mohol clarified that the government’s primary focus is on creating a supportive environment for the aviation industry rather than enforcing direct price controls. “Our focus is on fostering a supportive environment for the burgeoning aviation sector,” he added. The ministry’s approach underscores its commitment to balancing regulatory oversight with encouragement of industry growth.
