NEW DELHI: In order to overcome pilot shortage, the government is planning a major revamp of flying school Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Academy (IGRUA).

The government will soon invite major global aviation players in flight training, said civil aviation minister Praful Patel on Saturday.

In this regard, the civil aviation ministry has invited expressions of interest from international players. Registered as a Society, IGRUA would eventually be converted into a company so that a joint venture partner could also be brought in, Patel added.

The government has acquired six trainer aircraft, and it plans to pump in about Rs 60 crore for modernisation of flying schools. The government has also planned to give majority stake to foreign players in the Gondia Flying school project, which involves an estimated investment of over Rs 350 crore.

The civil aviation has also announced financial support that will be given to private flying schools for revival. The Aeroclub of India will select the schools that will be given funds. The ministry will obtain funds for this purpose from the budgetary allocation made by Planning Commission.
