Govt okays AAI's proposal to construct new terminal

NEW DELHI: The government has cleared construction of a new international passenger terminal at Thiruvananthapuram airport at a cost of Rs 246 crore.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday, approved a proposal to allow the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to construct the new terminal building in two phases.

The first phase of the project would be completed in 18 months from the date the contract is awarded to AAI. This would nearly double the capacity of the airport to handle passengers.

On completion of the second phase, capacity of the international terminal would be raised further. The airport is expected to handle about 17 lakh international passengers in 2016-17, up from 9 lakh in 2004-05.

While the first phase would cost Rs 165.58 crore, the second phase would cost an estimated Rs 80 crore. After the project is completed, international operations at the airport would shift to the new building and the existing one would cater to domestic operations.
