Scheduled to commence operations by the year's end, the airport, situated approximately 75 km from Delhi, marks the National Capital Region's (NCR) second international aviation hub. Developed across 5,000 hectares of land in a phased manner under a public-private partnership model, the project's first phase spanning 1,300 hectares is nearing fruition.
CEO Christoph Schnellmann envisions the Noida International Airport as a flagship greenfield airport, firmly rooted in a philosophy of net-zero emissions. "Sustainability and environmental impact were pivotal considerations guiding our choice of planning and design teams, construction partners, and concessionaires," Schnellmann expressed.
Dedicated efforts towards preserving local biodiversity are evident with the earmarking of an eight-acre forest reserve within the airport premises. Over 580 trees, including indigenous species like pipal and banyan, have already found new homes through meticulous transplantation methods, ensuring no net loss of biodiversity.
"Our transplantation process adheres to scientific principles, encompassing pruning, root ball preparation, tree shifting, and planting," Schnellmann affirmed. The use of organic manure further underscores the commitment to sustainable practices.
The airport's green footprint extends to the creation of 133 hectares of lush greenery within its confines, poised to offset carbon emissions. Embracing renewable energy, rainwater harvesting, onsite waste management, sewage treatment facilities, and electric ground support equipment form integral components of the airport's eco-friendly initiatives.
Furthermore, the adoption of innovative technology from Nanogence Catalyst by the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor promises enhanced material performance while curbing carbon emissions.
The Noida International Airport stands as a testament to the aviation industry's evolving commitment towards environmental stewardship. With a blend of innovation and conscientious planning, it charts a course towards a greener, more sustainable future for air travel in India.
