DGCA probes flight landing on wrong runway

NEW DELHI: The enquiry by the DGCA into a SpiceJet aircraft landing on the wrong runway at the airport here will be completed in a few days and the two pilots responsible for the incident have been de-rostered.
A major mishap was averted yesterday as there was no aircraft or vehicle on the secondary runway when the Boeing 737-800, carrying 171 passengers from Jammu, landed on it even though it had been cleared by the air traffic control to land on the main runway that was functional.
Official sources said the DGCA will complete its probe into the incident in a "day or two" as the cockpit voice recorder and ATC tapes were being reviewed.
The sources said the pilots, even after acknowledging the ATC's clearance, landed on the secondary runway on a visual approach.
SpiceJet officials said the incident "requires serious consideration" and said they were awaiting the DGCA's report to take whatever further action is necessary.
Responding to queries, some senior pilots and aviators, who sought anonymity, said such an incident was bound to happen as runways at the Delhi airport did not have "flashing light" indicators to enable pilots to land on functional runways.
Pointing to infrastructure issues, they said some taxi- tracks did not even have proper lights and referred to a few recent instances when aircraft of foreign carriers had got onto the wrong tracks.
While the re-alignment of runways from the existing converging set-up to a parallel one will take three to four years, they said installation of proper lighting should be taken up forthwith to prevent such incidents instead of giving emphasis on terminal buildings and toilets.
