BANGALORE: Rising air fares and the overall slowdown in the economy have made tech firms bite the bullet on their employee travel expenses. Air fares across the price spectrum, which have risen by almost 30% in the last 90 days, is causing severe financial heart burn to companies.

"We have been asked to do our flight bookings around 15 days to one month in advance to ensure that we pick the lowest price ticket," said an employee of a leading IT product firm. Also there is now focus on bringing the cost of overseas air travel to the 'bare minimum'.

"Many tech firms are currently negotiating with their travel agents. Internally , people who travel on on-site assignments are asked to opt for cost-effective air travel options, to take less costly hubs to fly out and even plan their travel in advance so that tickets are cheaper," said a travel desk executive at a Tier I tech firm.

According to employees from some of the city's leading tech firms, "initially for foreign travel we were given a wide range of routes to choose from. Now, we fly only on routes that cost's the lowest , which most often than not has more than two stopovers before we reach our final destination". What's more, some technolgy firms have even gone ahead and formed special teams to drive cost-cutting measures.

"Cost-cutting is the new mantra across every enterprise today be it domestic or multinational," said HR head of a leading tech MNC.
