CMZ norms to facilitate Navi Mumbai airport construction
Government's notification on Coastal Management Zone has made the way easier for construction of greenfield airport proposed in neighbouring Navi Mumbai.
Maharashtra Government will put forth its views on CMZ norms at a special meeting with Central Government officials in Delhi over CMZ issue on July 15.
"CMZ draft sent by the Central Government allows airport construction in coastal zone," a senior official from the Environment Department said.
"The notification clears a major hindrance in the airport development project. But the final draft is yet to be designed. However, the Ministry of Environment and Forests has given its in-principle approval to the construction of a second international airport last month", he said.
The main obstacle for the airport is the 1991 Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) notification, which bans construction in CRZ areas.
"At the meeting, we will be putting some suggestions and objections about CMZ. A request would also be made to retain the clause supporting construction of airport in final draft of CMZ," he said.
The State Government last week appointed City Industrial and Development Corporation (CIDCO) as the nodal agency for the Navi Mumbai airport.
The Rs 9,970 crore airport, scheduled to be ready by 2012, would be executed through public-private partnership. The State Government will make land available for the project free of cost.
Around 2,000 hectare land, including 1150 hectares CIDCO land, 443 hectares government owned land and 457 hectares private land would be required for the project.
