Civil Aviation Min to decide on ESMA in Jet case: Kharge
Labour Minister Mallikarjun Kharge today said Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) could be invoked against striking Jet Airways pilots if the Civil Aviation ministry recommends so but hoped that matter would be resolved before that.

NEW DELHI: Labour Minister Mallikarjun Kharge today said Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) could be invoked against striking Jet Airways pilots if the Civil Aviation ministry recommends so but hoped that matter would be resolved before that.
"The Civil Aviation Ministry should say whether ESMA is necessary or with negotiation, this problem is resolved, or they (the ministry) are going to talk with the management," Kharge told reporters on the sidelines of a seminar here when asked whether the government would invoking ESMA in the case.
He said, "Both (Jet Airways pilots and management) had approached Joint Labour Commissioner in Mumbai and he is in the process of reconciliation. When reconciliations is there, one should not go on strike. But, unfortunately this has happened."
"The Civil Aviation Ministry is doing its best to patch up. I hope it would be resolved shortly," he said.
"We want that the matter is settled there itself (at Joint Commissioner level in Mumbai) otherwise if it is referred to us under the Industrial Disputes Act, it will take a lot of time," he added.
