'China Eastern may still join Oneworld'

China Eastern Airlines' talks to join the Oneworld alliance won't be affected by Singapore Airlines' bid for a stake in the Chinese carrier, a Oneworld executive said.

BEIJING: China Eastern Airlines' talks to join the Oneworld alliance won't be affected by Singapore Airlines' bid for a stake in the Chinese carrier, a Oneworld executive said.
Oneworld can accommodate carriers in China that are partly owned by members of another airline grouping such as Star Alliance, to which Singapore Airlines belongs, Managing Partner John McCulloch said today.
Singapore Airlines' pursuit of a China Eastern stake would raise concerns "in an alliance context in other markets," said McCulloch, who was attending a conference in Vancouver. "But in China, we don't see it as a complication."
Oneworld, whose members include Qantas Airways and Japan Airlines wants to attract airlines from China and India to expand in the world's two most populous countries.
Alliances allow members to share ticket sales on routes that they don't operate on their own, and negotiate for price discounts on everything from jet fuel to aircraft and parts.
