Chennai airport suspends arrivals till 6 pm due to severe rains; departures to continue

The Chennai airport on Thursday suspended arrivals till 6 pm due to severe rain and heavy cross winds, while adding that departures would continue.

"Due to severe rains and heavy crosswinds, arrivals at Chennai Airport will remain suspended from 1315 hrs to 1800 hrs, today. Departures will continue," the Chennai Airport Twitter handle posted.

Yesterday, four arrivals and four departures were cancelled at Chennai airport due to bad weather. The flights were cancelled due to anticipated bad weather conditions on Wednesday evening and at night.


"Chennai Airport regrets the inconvenience caused to esteemed passengers due to severe weather conditions. Passengers are requested to contact concerned airline(s) for any updates regarding schedules," it added.

The death toll in Chennai following heavy rains has risen to 14, said officials.

"Due to overnight rainfall, there is waterlogging in parts of Chennai. 13 subways waterlogged will be cleared, 160 fallen trees removed. In last 4 days, almost 20 lakh people given food packets in Chennai", said Kumar Jayanth, Principal Secretary, Revenue Department, Tamil Nadu.
