Chaos at Mumbai airport: Shiv Sena backed taxi union rally and Jet Airways evacuation drill

The main runway at the airport was shut for an hour in the evening due to some repair work leading the use of the alternate runway.

MUMBAI: Passengers at the Mumbai airport faced some glitches on Saturday, due to a demonstration,an evacuation drill, an hour-long shut down of the main runway and a heated altercation between angry passengers and the staff of an airline.

Earlier in the day, a taxi drivers' union, said to be affiliated under Shiv Sena, held a demonstration outside.

Separately, Jet Airways did an evacuation drill at the airport terminal.

"There is an Emergency Evacuation drill conducted at Terminal 2. We request you not to panic," the airline informed its passengers.

Later, the main runway at the airport was shut for an hour in the evening due to some repair work leading the use of the alternate runway.

An airport spokesperson confirmed all the above but said it didnt kead to any disruptions of operations.
