Cathay rejects Pakistan plane scam allegations

Cathay Pacific on Friday rejected allegations it provided millions of dollars in kickbacks to an official of Pakistan's flag carrier during the sale of six second-hand planes.

HONG KONG: Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific on Friday rejected allegations it provided millions of dollars in kickbacks to an official of Pakistan's flag carrier during the sale of six second-hand planes.

Cathay confirmed it was being probed by Pakistan's National Accountability Bureau (NAB) which accused a sales manager and two other people of causing losses of 31 million US dollars to Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

In a statement, Cathay said it had cooperated fully with the inquiry and denied the claims involving kickbacks which enabled the lease and sale of the discarded Boeing aircraft.

"Cathay Pacific has taken legal advice in the matter and is advised that it acted correctly in the lease and sale of the aircraft in question and that payments made to its representative in Pakistan were proper and were made pursuant to contractual obligations," it said.

"The company wishes to emphasise that the aircraft in question were in good condition as they had been refurbished prior to being leased to PIA and had, to the company's knowledge, been in service with PIA ever since," it added.
