CHENNAI: Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia will start its India operations in a joint venture with Tata Sons in September, a senior executive said at the commencement of the recruitment process for cabin crew in Chennai on Saturday.

"The way things are going looks like we will start operations in September provided we get all the necessary approvals," Bo Lingam, chief operating officer of Air Asia said.

"About 700 people have attended the interview in just an hour. We are expecting 5,000 candidates," said Snhaila Hassan, the group head flight attendant.

The company will recruit 100 employees to begin with.

Candidates should be between 20 and 32 and "fit the AirAsia uniform".

Snhaila said the age group they were looking for was 20-32 and most important factor was they needed to"fit into the AirAsia uniform".
