Air traffic in Kerala grows 100% in 3 yrs
Contributed mainly by Keralites living in Gulf countries such as Dubai, Kuwait, Sharjah and Bahrain, the southern state saw air service leapfrogging more than 100% in the past three years.
Domestic as well as Gulf traffic in Kerala outpaced the industry growth in the country as a whole during the said period.
According to figures from the ministry of civil aviation, there are currently 103 flights per week operating from Thiruvananthapuram as against 54 in 2004. While 47 flights are operated by Indian carriers, 56 are by foreign ones.
Other major cities of the state such as Cochin and Calicut recorded nearly 100% growth during the past three years.
Industry watchers attribute the explosive growth during these years to tourist inflow and huge NRI population in the state.
