Air India teases another new Boeing 787-9 from Everett

“Fresh from the factory floor in Everett. Another step in our transformation story. Stay tuned,” the airline said in a post on X, without disclosing details of the aircraft or its delivery timeline.

The development comes months after Air India received its first line-fit, or factory-built, Boeing 787-9 in January. The aircraft, registered VT-AWA, was ferried non-stop from Boeing’s Everett factory to Delhi by an Air India cockpit crew in a flight lasting nearly 17 hours.
The 296-seat aircraft features three cabin classes — Business, Premium Economy and Economy — with bespoke interiors installed directly on Boeing’s production line. Air India had said the new 787-9 cabins would set the benchmark for its wider Dreamliner fleet.
The airline had earlier outlined plans to receive six widebody aircraft in 2026, comprising Airbus A350-1000s and Boeing 787-9s, including VT-AWA.
Air India is also undertaking a large-scale retrofit programme for its existing fleet. 26 of its legacy Boeing 787-8 aircraft are being progressively refurbished, with several expected to return to service in 2026 with upgraded cabins and the airline’s new branding.
By the end of 2026, Air India had said nearly 60% of its widebody fleet is expected to feature modern interiors.
The latest teaser signals another milestone in the carrier’s ongoing transformation, which includes a massive aircraft induction programme, fleet modernisation and an overhaul of its onboard product as it seeks to strengthen its position in the international long-haul market.
