Fresh from the factory, the aircraft is set to serve passengers on medium- and long-haul routes, Air India said, adding that its transformation programme was continuing.
The latest delivery comes after Air India on Sunday posted a teaser from Boeing’s Everett facility, saying: “Fresh from the factory floor in Everett. Another step in our transformation story. Stay tuned.”
The arrival of VT-AWD marks another addition to Air India’s fleet modernisation programme. The airline had received its first line-fit, or made-for-Air India, Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner in January this year.
The aircraft, registered VT-AWA, was ferried non-stop from Boeing’s Everett factory in Washington state to Delhi. The 296-seat aircraft has three cabin classes — Business, Premium Economy and Economy — and features bespoke cabin interiors installed directly on Boeing’s production line.
Air India had earlier said it expected to receive six widebody aircraft in 2026, comprising Airbus A350-1000s and Boeing 787-9s, including the aircraft already delivered.

The Tata Group-owned carrier is also retrofitting 26 of its legacy Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners with upgraded cabins and refreshed interiors as part of its broader transformation programme. Air India has said nearly 60% of its widebody fleet is expected to feature modern interiors by the end of 2026.
