Air India Plane Crash: Tata Group to provide Rs 1 cr to each victim’s family, announces Chairman N Chandrasekaran

The Tata Group will provide Rs 1 crore to the family of each person who lost their life in Thursday’s Air India plane crash near Ahmedabad, announced the company's chairman N Chandrasekaran on Thursday.

Tata Group will also cover the medical expenses of those injured and ensure that they receive all necessary care and support, he said. Additionally, "we will provide support in the building up of the B J Medical's hostel."

"No words can adequately express the grief we feel at this moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones, and with those who have been injured."

242 people onboard, fire after takeoff

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, headed to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff at 1:39 pm from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the plane had 242 people onboard, including two pilots and ten cabin crew members. The aircraft was commanded by Capt. Sumeet Sabharwal with First Officer Clive Kundar.

“As per ATC, the aircraft departed at 1339 IST from Runway 23. It gave a MAYDAY call to ATC, but no further response was received. The aircraft crashed outside the airport perimeter and was seen emitting heavy black smoke,” the DGCA said in a statement.

Firefighting, rescue teams on site

Heavily fueled for its long-haul journey, the aircraft erupted into flames after crashing near Meghaninagar. Multiple fire engines, ambulances, and rescue teams were rushed to the scene. Three National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams comprising 90 personnel were deployed from Gandhinagar, with additional teams en route from Vadodara.

At the time of writing, there is no official confirmation of casualties, and rescue operations are ongoing. Air India stated it is in the process of ascertaining details and will continue to provide updates via its official website and social media handles.
