HYDERABAD: State-run airline Air India will make its formal induction into the Star Alliance by April-May 2009, said a senior Air India official here today.

Star Alliance has opted for Air India (AI) to become its member and AI will be the first Indian Carrier to join the alliance, Air India Corporate Communications Executive Director Jitender Bhargava told reporters here.

Commenting on the announcement for an operational alliance between Kingfisher and Jet Airways, he said, "Each airline can decide what is best for them and the same cannot apply for other airlines".

"Ofcourse, the airlines are passing through a difficult financial crisis, being witnessed in the whole world, and it was natural for airlines like Kingfisher and Jet Airways to think for such a proposal," he said.

Though, this alliance will help in bringing down operational costs, he said. "Its essential for you, in view of rising fuel costs and other factors leading to slow down in the aviation sector," Bhargava added.
