NEW DELHI: Air India board has approved the Indian flag carrier joining the Star Alliance, an amalgam of various airlines globally, for which discussions have been recommended with their management.
Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel informed this to the Lok Sabha while replying to a written question.
The decision was taken with a view to enable the new entity formed by the merger of Air India and Indian Airlines to compete globally, he said.
The minister said the Board of Directors of Air India Limited approved Air India joining Star Alliance and have recommended initiation of discussions with their management on the joining process and related activities.
The details of terms and conditions of this tie-up would be worked out, he said.
Star Alliance comprises Air Canada, Air New Zealand, ANA (Japanese airlines), Asiana Airlines (Korean airlines), Austrian airlines, BMI (UK), LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Scandinavian airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, Spanair, Swiss, Tap Portugal, Thai and US Airways.
This will give access to customers to an expanded global network and help Air India in re-aligning of international routes networks to access new markets, he said.
Bird Hits: A total of 536 bird hit cases have been reported from January one, 2004 to December 31, 2006, the minister said in reply to another question.
