Agents threaten to boycott foreign carriers

Even as domestic airlines have agreed to pay a 3% commission on ticket sales, although under pressure, to travel agents, most foreign carriers are yet to arrive at a decision.

MUMBAI: Even as domestic airlines have agreed to pay a 3% commission on ticket sales, although under pressure, to travel agents, most foreign carriers are yet to arrive at a decision. Singapore Airlines, one of the largest foreign carriers operating in India, has claimed that it has regularly paid to agents, a claim that has been contested by travel agents.

Barring a few, most foreign carriers, including Singapore Airlines, are not paying any transaction fee or commission. We will begin boycotting foreign airlines if they dont fall in line, Rajii Rai, president of the Travel Agents Association of India, said. When contacted, a Singapore Airlines spokesperson said: We are regularly paying transaction fee to all agents since November.

Lufthansa, Qatar Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Air France, United, Continental, KLM and Japan Airlines, among other international carriers, stopped paying 5% commission from November, forcing agents to shift to a fixed transaction fee on every ticket purchased.
