A year on, AAIB to release interim report on Air India crash that killed 260 in Ahmedabad

New Delhi: The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is likely to publish an interim report next month on the investigation into the June 2025 Air India aircraft crash in Ahmedabad that killed 260 people, said people familiar with the matter.

The bureau needs more time to prepare the final report, which requires consultations with stakeholders including Air India, Boeing and other investigative agencies like the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), said one of the persons.

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) recommends that the state conducting the investigation publish a report within a year, but if it is not possible to do so, it should release an interim statement annually, on each anniversary of the occurrence, detailing the progress of the investigation and any safety issues raised.

Fifty-three British nationals died in the crash, prompting the UK's accident investigator to become part of the case while the NTSB of the US is assisting as both the aircraft maker Boeing and engine manufacturer General Electric are American companies.

As per the ICAO's rule, the state conducting the investigation has to send the final report to the stakeholders and wait for 60 days for their comments.

That process has not yet started, the person said, adding that the interim report would be detailed and establish a lot of facts on the accident.

AAIB director general GVG Yugandhar did not respond to queries on the matter.

The preliminary report presented by the AAIB, tasked with probing the aircraft crash, said that seconds after take-off, the fuel control switches of both engines briefly moved from 'run' to 'cut off', shutting off fuel supply and causing a loss of power.

The AAIB hasn't issued any directions for Boeing or GE which indicates that it hasn't found any critical issues with the equipment, said people in the know.
